Bloginostalgiaa: Haastevastauksia - Thoughts on gardening

No, sitä tärkeämpää on muistella vanhoja aikoja... :) Palataan siis hetkeksi juurille. Villa Emiliahan oli alussa My Woodland Garden, (englanninkielinen) puutarhablogi.

1. Millä vyöhykkeellä puutarhasi sijaitsee, ja mitä haasteita ja iloja maantieteellinen sijainti aiheuttaa puutarhasi hoidossa?

Puutarhamme sijaitsee Itä-Suomessa vyöhykkeiden 4 ja 5 rajamailla. Täällä voidaan vain haaveilla monien ihanien puutarhakasvien kasvattamisesta. Varsinkin köynnöskasveissa on paljon sellaisia, joiden menestymisvyöhykkeet ovat harmillisen eteläisiä. Luonnonkasvilajejakin on täällä vähemmän.

Geranium sylvaticum

A dear blogger friend, Laura, has forwarded me a challenge. It consists of five questions about gardening.

What is your plant hardiness zone and how does it affect your gardening?

Following the Finnish classification, our plant hardiness zone is Zone 4 (IV). Our areas, in the inland, are characterized by warm summers and freezing winters. In summer, the temperature usually rises to +20 °C (68 °F) or more and occasionally gets above +30°C (86 °F). In midsummer we have more than 20 hours of daylight.  In winter, this part of the country is covered by snow, usually, from December to March.  My "personal low-temperature record" is -37 °C (-34.6 °F). It happened years ago; I'm actually rather proud... I went to the nearest grocery shop on foot that day to buy more food for the small garden birds.

In the more southern parts of the country, gardeners can of course cultivate successfully a much wider and more interesting assortment of plants. On the plus side, we have fewer pests and diseases as well.

2. Minkä haaveen toivoisit toteutuvan puutarhassasi?

Minulle mieluisin viherympäristö on hoidettu, mutta melko luonnonmukainen. Koetan lisätä kasvivalikoimaa ottaen mallia ympäröivästä luonnosta. Aivan talomme vierellä on sekametsää ja isojakin havupuita, joiden suojaan istutan alppiruusuja ja muita happaman maan kasveja. Pidän myös paljon esimerkiksi saniaisista. Haaveilen joidenkin jalopuiden istuttamisesta.

Ja sitten on köynnöskasvihaaveita. Italiasta tuoduista siemenistä on kylvetty liilakukkaista sinisadetta. Kasvien versot kasvavat melkein pari metriä kesän aikana, mutta leikkaan niitä aika voimakkaasti tässä vaiheessa.  Pian nähdään onko talvehtiminen (siirrettävässä astiassa sisätiloissa) onnistunut tänä vuonna. Eihän sinisade kuulu itäsuomalaiseen maalaismaisemaan, mutta kyllä olisi ihanaa koristaa sen kukilla terassin säleikköä. Siemenistä lisättyjen sinisateiden sanotaan kukkivan vasta kymmenvuotiaina, joten kukkia täytyy vielä odottaa monta vuotta, mutta itsekasvatetulla on tunnearvoakin.

Wisteria floribunda

Garden dreams?

If I try to imagine my ideal garden, many images come to my mind: a beautiful, shady lawn, surrounded by open woodland, "orderly but natural"...  it looks less as if it had been planned and constructed than as if it might have come naturally.  My garden of delight should certainly have four basic elements: trees, grass, water... and slopes. And winding paths and benches and a lamp post. :)

Thus, I try to plant trees, shrubs and perennials that are native to this area, but I will try to introduce some not native "valuable broad-leaved trees" as well, especially different species of maples. It's because I love them but also because with the warming of the planet, trees planted now may live in a substantially warmer climate later. Among the other crazy dreams of mine, there are wisterias and lavenders... and lemon trees in a small greenhouse...

3. Mikä haave puutarhassasi on jo toteutunut?

Olen pyrkinyt lisäämään kasveja, jotka näyttävät menestyvän hyvin.  Alla olevat juhannusruusut ovat muutaman vuoden ikäisiä siirrettyjä sivuversoja. Viime kesänä ne kukkivat ihanasti.

Rosa pimpinellifolia  'Plena'

A dream already fulfilled?

I have tried to propagate plants that seem to do well in our garden. These pretty burnet roses have grown from suckers transplanted three or four years ago.  Last summer they bloomed profusely with their fragrant, double flowers.

What is your favourite spot for relaxing and dreaming away?

I think for many Finns it's especially easy to relax at the lakeside, listening birch leaves swaying in the gentle breeze and waves lapping against each other.  In addition to the lake view, I enjoy very much grassy lawns. In the evening photo above, you can see a tiny part of the one near the lake shore. Did you know that already Albertus Magnus (1193-1280) gave instructions for making a lawn? "Nothing refreshes the sight so much as fine short grass." I so agree with him! (NB Of course ours are clover lawns, not watered nor treated with chemicals.)

5. Mikä on parasta puutarhaharrastuksessa?

Puutarha on suurenmoinen opettaja.

Lupinus regalis

What is the best thing in gardening?

The beauty. The deep joy and sense of gratitude of being able to witness and work for it.

My favourite garden writer has already answered to this question, better than I ever could:

Let no one be discouraged by the thought of how much there is to learn. Looking back upon nearly thirty years of gardening (the earlier part of it in groping ignorance with scant means of help), I can remember no part of it that was not full of pleasure and encouragement. For the first steps are steps into a delightful Unknown, the first successes are victories all the happier for being scarcely expected, and with the growing knowledge comes the widening outlook, and the comforting sense of an ever-increasing gain of critical appreciation. Each new step becomes a little surer, and each new grasp a little firmer, till, little by little, comes the power of intelligent combination, the nearest thing we can know to the mighty force of creation.

And a garden is a grand teacher. It teaches patience and careful watchfulness; it teaches industry

and thrift; above all, it teaches entire trust. "Paul planteth and Apollos watereth, but God giveth the increase." The good gardener knows with absolute certainty that if he does his part, if he gives the
labour, the love, and every aid that his knowledge of his craft, experience of the conditions of his place, and exercise of his personal wit can work together to suggest, that so surely as he does this diligently and faithfully, so surely will God give the increase. Then with the honestly-earned success comes the consciousness of encouragement to renewed effort, and, as it were, an echo of the gracious words, "Well done, good and faithful servant."

(Gertrude Jekyll: Wood and Garden)"

Kasveja tulee ostettua entistä harvemmin, vaikka puutarhamyymälöissä shoppailu on vastustamattoman ihanaa. Siemenistä on saatu jotain kaunista kasvamaan ja toisaalta siirtelen (luonnon)kasveja ryhmiksi tai paremmille kasvupaikoille. Pörriäiskasvien määrää on lisätty eli olen kylvänyt niittykukkia useille alueille eri puolille pihaa.

Tällaiselle nurmikolle näkyy olevan nimikin; sehän on kukkanurmikko.

Tämän vanhan postauksen kommenttien lukeminen on hieman haikeaa. Useat kommentoijista eivät bloggaa enää. - Kiitos muuten nykyisille lukijoille hienoista kommenteistanne edelliseen postaukseen! <3

Aika menee eteenpäin hurjaa vauhtia. Helmikuu on pian lopussa. Uuden kuukauden alku on aina kiva asia: se tuo mukanaan uudet blogihaasteet.

Mukavaa sunnuntain jatkoa!

Bloginostalgiaa - Reposted Friday thoughts

Helmikuuta Pohjois-Italiassa

Hei ja ihanaa helmikuista perjantaita!

Villa Emilia -blogi täyttää tänä vuonna 10 vuotta. Aloitin siis 2014, en todellakaan ensimmäisten joukossa. :) Innoituksenani olivat puutarha-, koti- ja käsityöaiheiset blogit varsinkin Yhdysvalloista ja Kanadasta ja kielenäkin alussa etupäässä englanti. Osallistuin kivoihin blogihaasteisiin ja tutustuin pian moniin ihaniin bloggaajiin... joista monet eivät valitettavasti enää päivitä blogejaan. Muistan lämpimästi esimerkiksi tämän postauksen alkuperäisiä kommentoijia.

Kommenteista puheen ollen, muutama päivä sitten löysin yhden oman kommenttini blogini roskapostista. :) Muitakin sinne on mennyt aiheettomasti, joten muistakaa tarkistaa roskapostikansionne säännöllisesti.

Alkuvuosieni postaukset alkavat näyttää minusta jo varsin nostalgisilta.

Alla olevat kuvat ja tekstit ovat helmikuulta 2015.

FROM 2015: Fun, Fabulous, Fantastic or Fascinating Friday...

I have noticed that many blogs participate in different kinds of "Five on Friday" or "Friday's Favourites" blog challenges. Such a good idea! For today's post, I have made a list of five things that made me happy during this week - there were many of them:

1. Health. What I was afraid could be the seasonal influenza, might indeed be the influenza, but with symptoms alleviated by the vaccine. A great excuse for having a nap or going to bed early. :) Eating candies is not good especially when you are ill, but they do look invigorating.
EDIT 2/2024: I don't like this photo very much any more but I keep it as a memory because it was part of the original post. :)

2. Spring is on its way. We still haven't seen much sun in this part of the country, but at least we have had some days with pleasant temperatures.
EDIT 2/2024: That was 2015. This year it's the opposite. There's much sunshine... and cold temperatures, -31 C last night. :)

3. Seed packets hold the promise of spring. This lavender should survive in our hardiness zone. (From Exotic Garden.)
EDIT 2/2024: My lavenders are still alive and when finally moved in full sun and in well-drained soil, last summer they were doing well. <3

Who wouldn't love lavenders? What is funny in the (old) picture below is that it was a photo of me watering the shrubs (in Italy) but you can't see me anymore... One of my first efforts of photo-editing. :)

4. Inspiring plant catalogues keep arriving in these weeks. In this one (of Garden Center Kauppila, in Turku) there were for example Petunias in lovely tones. I would love to mix these colours...

5. ... a little bit like Nature does.

In 2015, I joined Karen at My Little Home and Garden for Sunlit Sunday. The links seem to work but unfortunately the blog is not active at the moment.

Ihanaa viikonloppua kaikille!

🤗

Have a lovely weekend!

Lisbeth Werner: Puk seikkailee jälleen - Trees and sunshine

Helmet-lukuhaasteen kohta 38: Kirjan kannessa tai kuvauksessa on puu

Tämä kohta on helppo. :) Kirjoja puista minulla on vaikka kuinka paljon.

Tanskankielinen alkuteos on ilmestynyt 1969. Suomennos on Kaisa Peltosen.

Julkaisen samalla uudelleen kuvia yhdestä lempipostauksestani viiden vuoden takaa.

In English: Hello all! Today I post some old photos, taken in March 2015. There was much more snow back then. :)

The sun was shining brightly. The weather was windy, but otherwise it was silent and peaceful in the wood. Only the peeling birch bark was flapping in the wind.

Even though there was much snow, it was easy to walk around because the snow crust was thick and strong. I wasn't familiar with the English term and was happy to find a really helpful meteorological glossary, by the American Meteorological Society, available at http://glossary.ametsoc.org/wiki/Main_Page.

Thus, a snow crust is "a crisp, firm, outer surface upon snow.  -  Basically, three types of snow crusts exist, formed by 1) the refreezing of surface snow, after melting and/or wetting, to form a hard layer of snow (sun crust, rain crust, spring crust); 2) the packing of snow into a hard layer by wind action (wind crust, wind slab); and 3) the freezing of surface water, however derived, to form a continuous layer of ice on top of snow (film crust, ice crust). A snow crust is designated as "breakable" or "unbreakable" according to its ability to support a person on skis."

One of the photos of my collage (at the top of this post) shows how the snow crust carried easily a person, even without skis or snowshoes.

The bark of a Scots pine is thin, flaky and almost orange on the upper trunk and branches:

Woollen mittens are warm and surprisingly wet-and-snow-resistant. :)

In March 2015, I participated with this post in the following blog events: Mosaic Monday (link not valid anymore), Karen's Sunlit SundayOur World Tuesday and Wednesday around the World.

Stay safe and healthy!

Reposted: From my dear old C2-05

Hello all! In lack of good photos and/or good texts (it's so very cloudy and dark in these days!), I post again some favourite pics of mine. These photos aren't good technically - they were taken using a-not-very-advanced mobile phone - but the flowers were really pretty! :)

In 2015, it started to be time for me to upgrade to a new mobile phone and I transferred the photos taken with my old, little Nokia phone to the computer. These were some of my favourites... depicting the Stairs of Harju, in Jyväskylä, Finland. Or rather, the lovely nasturtiums planted there to adorn the steps.

Hei taas! Minulla olisi paljon postausaiheita, mutta kuvista tulee kauheita eikä tekstiäkään synny. Seuraava postaukseni on taas kirjapostaus. Kyseessä on kirja, josta en pitänyt kovin paljon, ja on kova työ keksiä jotain fiksua sanottavaa siitä. :)

Such a beautiful colour:

There were rhododendrons too...

I had called this photo "Anarchy in JKL". At Harju, the park benches were always dark brown. One morning in autumn, I noticed that somebody had spray-painted one of the benches and the litter bin next to it... and they looked just fabulous...

Fortunately I took some photos, because after one or two days they had been repainted with the thick brown paint. Was the colour too whimsical for the Maintenance Division? To be fair, I must tell that all the benches seemed to have been painted, perhaps it was to be done before winter. It was a pity, though; I would have preferred benches like this. Or what do you think?

Hugs! Halauksia! Abbracci!

Reposted: Icicles and cute critters - Kuvia viiden vuoden takaa

Hello all! January 2020 doesn't look quite like could be expected. Usually we have much more snow, like for example five years ago... All the photos and texts of this post have been originally published in January 2015.

There is beauty everywhere around us.

In the last few days, we have seen some unusual icicles. It had been snowing much and on all roofs there were thick, heavy blankets of snow. With thawing, the snow started slowly to slide downwards (and fell down).  In this photo, you can see some of the last chunks still on a roof:

The melt water running under the blanket of snow had formed funny-looking icicles:

This is one of them, seen through our kitchen window:

In the following day, it was sparkling golden in the rays of the afternoon sun:

Looking like abstract art:

Here another one, again seen from the kitchen window:

Below, you can see air bubbles and some seeds trapped in the ice. The colours haven't been edited. The sun was shining and the dark background colour of this and the first photo comes from the trees behind (on the other side of the lake):

And then the critter update (of January 2015!).  One of "our" squirrels has learned to climb a steel pole to reach the bird feeder you can see in this post. I went to tell him/her that even though inventive, this approach is not appreciated by us. He/she decided to back away for a while:

A very cute willow tit came to keep an eye on the situation... and on the feeder:

Thank you for your visit!

xoxo

Reposted: On lichens, poems, and bears

Mosses and lichens are fascinating organisms. They embellish the rocks and the bark of trees in forests and woodlands. I have tried to take photos especially of cup lichens (below, it may be Cladonia fimbriata, but I'm not certain), because they always make me remember a lovely poem by the Finnish poet Helvi Juvonen. This is a repost from November 2014... from those remote times when I didn't have many readers yet. :)

Pikarijäkälä

Jäkälä nosti pikarinsa hauraan
ja sade täytti sen, ja pisarassa
kimalsi taivas tuulta pidättäen.

Jäkälä nosti pikarinsa hauraan:
Nyt malja elämämme rikkaudelle.

Cup lichen

The lichen raised its fragile cup,
and rain filled it, and in the drop
the sky glittered, holding back the wind.

The lichen raised its fragile cup:
Now let’s toast the richness of our lives.

Helvi Juvonen (1919–59) was a Finnish poet and translator. She published five collections of poetry in the 1950s, and a sixth one was published posthumously. Suffering from malnutrition and other health problems, she died young, but during her short literary career she wrote compelling poetry characterised by simplicity, humour, intensity, and inner peace. She studied small, apparently humble things, rocks, plants, and animals, and found the strength and value of them.  She also translated into Finnish poems written by Emily Dickinson, with whom she shared the interest in nature and spiritual concerns.

The translation above is by Emily Jeremiah (born 1975). She is a Lecturer in German at Royal Holloway, University of London. Her very interesting article on the poetry of Helvi Juvonen can be read at http://www.booksfromfinland.fi/2010/05/dreaming-a-dream-the-poetry-of-helvi-juvonen/.

Juvonen also wrote short fairy-tales. Pikkukarhun talviunet (“The little bear’s winter dreams”) was published in 1974, edited by a friend of hers.  To all of us that love bears, I highly recommend the following related material by the literary journal "Books from Finland":

A valid field guide to the lichens and mosses of Finland/Kasvitieteen professori Jouko Rikkisen pätevä lajintuntemusopas Jäkälät ja sammalet Suomen luonnossa. Otava 2010 (2008).

Hei! ♥ Upea kesä kiitää sellaisella vauhdilla eteenpäin, ettei mukana tahdo pysyä. Päätin postata uudelleen nämä kuvat kahden vuoden takaa. Varsinkin ensimmäinen on suosikkini. Auringonpaistetta on riittänyt tänäkin vuonna ja huomiseksi tänne luvattu sade on tervetullutta.

Heinäkuussa 2016 osallistuin tällä postauksella Makrotex-haasteeseen.

Sydämellinen kiitos kaikille kommentoijille. Ihanaa HEINÄKUUTA!

Hello all! The weather has been exceptionally good. We have spent much time outdoors and I have taken lots of photos, of course, but they haven't been transferred from my camera to the computer yet. I decided to publish again this post, because it's one of my favourites ever. I like especially the first photo very much.

Needless to say, if you have left a comment in 2016, please don't feel obliged to leave another one now. :) A huge thank you to everyone. ♥

July = Flowers!

Small flower eaters are growing too. :) A young Lepus timidus or Lepus europaeus.

In July 2016, a blogger friend (unfortunately she's not blogging anymore) posted some delicious ice cream recipes and her post reminded me that the mint chocolate chip ice cream is one of my favourites and yet I had never tried to make it myself.

There are many tasty and fun condiments you can use when making ice cream.

The faithful Musso Stella does the work. :)

A berry sorbet - blueberries, lingonberries, some strawberry jam and water:

Amarene are great in/with ice cream. This sour cherry tree was photographed in Italy. We have some trees also in Finland but the harvest is much smaller... :)

Have a lovely new week and month!
