Jokanaisen remonttikirja - Ice flowers (in old photos)

Hei taas ja kaunista talvipäivää! 

Jatkan Helmet 2022 -haastetta vauhdikkaasti. Tänään voin ruksata kohdan 15: "Kirja käsittelee aihetta, josta haluat tietää lisää" ja lukemani kirja on Ella Kannisen ja Jasmiini Lappalaisen viime vuonna ilmestynyt Jokanaisen remonttikirja. Klikkasin sen ostoskoriin ruokaostosten mukana. Minulla on tapana selata verkkokaupan tuotteista myös kirjat ja silloin tällöin sattuu kohdalle uutta, kiinnostavaa luettavaa.

Jokanaisen remonttikirja on hyödyllinen ja rohkaiseva opas aloittelevalle remontoijalle, kuten minä. :) Olen esimerkiksi tapetoinut, mutta en ole koskaan irrottanut vanhaa tapettia. Kirjassa annetaan ohjeita sisämaalaukseen: seinien, katon, ovien, ikkunapuitteiden, laattojen, puulattian ja huonekalujen käsittelyyn. Opin uutta myös tapetoinnista, laatoituksesta ja laminaatin asennuksesta. Kirjan lopussa on neuvontaa antavien tahojen yhteystietoja, kompaktit luvut materiaalivalintojen vastuullisuudesta, oikeaoppisesta jätteidenkäsittelystä sekä – tärkeää, tärkeää! – asbestipitoisista materiaaleista. 

Inspiraatiota voisi ammentaa myös kirjassa vinkatuista Instagram-tileistä... jos nimittäin olisi Instagram-käyttäjä. Kivat sisustusblogit olisivat demokraattisempi inspiraation lähde. :D

Jasmiini Lappalaisella onkin Instagram-tilin lisäksi myös blogi, Yhden naisen armeija, josta löytää lisää remonttioppia kauniissa paketissa. :)

Joulukoristeet on jo keräilty melkein kokonaan pois. Yllä olevissa kuvissa näette vielä yhden tämän joulun tuunailuni. :) Liimasin vanhaan, pahviseen korttien myyntitelineeseen jouluisia tarroja ja siihen sai kätevästi esille saapuneet kortit. 

Kortteja lähetetään ja saadaan paljon vähemmän kuin vielä 5–10 vuotta sitten. Yli puolet jouluna 2021 saamistamme korteista on sinisävyisiä, mutta valitsin tähän näkyville punasävyiset, koska ne ovat kuitenkin ehkä enemmän jouluisia, minun mielestäni.

Mutta uuh, kuinka suttuisia kuvia. Valoa on vähän. Alla olevasta kuvasta erottaa juuri ja juuri, että siinä on suloinen pyrstötiainen. :) Jotain hyvää sentään joskus tapahtuu: paitsi pyrstötiaisia, lintulaudan läheisyydessä on ollut tänä talvena melkein tavallista enemmän hömötiaisia. Näyttäisi siltä, että ne arvostavat siemensekoituksia. Sekoitukset eivät sen sijaan miellytä esimerkiksi talitiaisia, jotka heittelevät kauransiemenet maahan, ja syövät vain pähkinät ja auringonkukansiemenet...

Tämän postauksen viimeiset kuvat ovat tammikuulta 2015. Kuvasin silloin innokkaasti jääkukkia kuistien ikkunoissa. Tänään aamupäivällä aurinko pilkahteli hieman esiin, mutta 24 pakkasastetta saivat minut pysymään sisällä ja katsomaan Chaplinin Diktaattoria Areenasta.

Hello all! In January 2015, I took many photos of ice in its different forms.

Fern frost is a great name for window frost: these patterns do look like some exotic, lush plants. I like this photo also because of the red background colour. Behind the window of a small glazed porch, there is a red wooden wall:

Beautiful flowers "grow" also on painted surfaces...

This is not a flower, this is... uh...

At this time of year, the sun doesn't climb much above the horizon, but it's there! These flowers were sparkling golden in the rays of the sun:

Reposted: A small jar candle

This post, from February 2015, is one of my favourites and for some time I have wanted to republish it:

I wanted to try again something we used to do years ago: recycling old candle stubs - by melting them down in a pan and pouring the melted wax into a mould.

Minulla on postauksia jonoksi asti odottamassa, mutta halusin postata tämän jutun uudelleen. Uusia lukijoita on tullut vuoden 2015 helmikuun jälkeen, tämä on yksi omista suosikkipostauksistani  - ja näissä kuvissa on ehkä paras leikkotulppaanikimppu mitä meillä on nähty. Veljeni osti kukat äitimme syntymäpäiväksi ja ne kestivät kauniina pitkään ja kuihtuivatkin kauniisti. :)

Lapsena tehtiin uusia kynttilöitä sulattamalla vanhoja. Taisin usein tehdä niistä raidallisia. Tämä suklaa-pähkinädippiastiaan valettu on varmasti tyylikkäin tuotokseni. :) Alla oleva dippikuva on netistä.

I had perfect materials for this project, first of all a beautiful small glass container (with a lid), received from my brother for Christmas. In the picture below (from http://www.cuisineaddict.com/ achat-fondue-chocolat-noir-noisette-300-g-mazet-2818.htm) you can see what it contained originally. Yummy!

The diameter of the jar is only about 4 cm (and that made the task a little bit more difficult).
I had also these old stubs I wanted to use - of a beautiful, intense red colour. For this candle, I used the remaining wick of one of the old ones. (Wicks can also be made at home or purchased at hobby stores.)

You can use pieces of non-toxic crayons to add a little colour and/or essential oils to give your candles a scent.

What you do is very simple. Just break up some old candles, stick a few pieces in a saucepan, over a low heat, and stir until the candles have melted. Then pour the melted wax carefully in the mould or jar, preferably using a saucepan with a pouring spout.

In case you haven't tried this before, here are some useful tips:

For better results, don't mix different types of candles.

When filling the mould(s), reserve some of the wax. 

Once your candle is almost completely hard, you will notice a depression around the wick.

Pour the reserved wax into the dip to make the dip fill in.
If you want a completely even surface, you may need to repeat this. 

For your safety, heat the wax in a double boiler 

(in a large pan containing hot water, into which the smaller pan is set)!

Never leave unattended the pan containing melting wax!

Well, how did it go? The result is not perfect, but I'm rather satisfied with my elegant little candle. :)

It could be used as a gift for occasions such as Valentine's Day...

A small curiosity, tomorrow will be "the day of the candle" in Finland. In the Finnish Lutheran Church, Candlemas (the presentation of Christ at the temple) is celebrated on the Sunday between 2 February and 8 February. This year it falls on the 5th. Traditionally, it was the day on which candles used in the church's worship during the year were blessed.

The sweet Leah of Faith's Crafts Box hosted a lovely giveaway some weeks ago. Guess who won!!! Some days ago the postwoman delivered not one but two parcels to me. Let's see what there was inside...

I knew there would be a book, three framed pictures, two balls of pure new wool, and a waterproof bag, but there were also surprise gifts... a stitching-themed wall calender, mixture of wildflower seeds, a travelling sewing kit, a weekly diary, and a pair of bath gloves. Everything so beautiful and useful, and almost everything even in my favourite colours! :)

Nature is an endless source of beauty, happiness and inspiration.

February is "helmikuu" in Finnish. "Helmi" means pearl (and "kuu" means month). Some say the name comes from the blanket of snow glistening in the sun, some say it comes from the icy "pearls" frozen to twigs and branches and glinting in the sunlight. Well, obviously the sparkling things are not pearls... they are diamonds, as can be clearly seen in the photo below, but "timanttikuu" would be too long a name. :)

This is how December should look! We practically don't have snow yet. It has been snowing already several times, but every time the snow has melted away.

We do enjoy the month though... wrapping gifts, baking, receiving nice parcels from relatives and friends, and decorating the home. :)

Looking for beauty

Ice is starting to cover our lake.

Water on the ice and some reflections:

There is beauty also in this dark season and we know that the light will start to return very soon.

On a cool autumn morning, raindrops glisten like diamonds. This photo was taken a year ago, but I wanted to share it again.

Yesterday it looked for a moment that the clouds were parting and there was a hint of a blue sky visible. It brought to my mind this photo and one of my favourite quotations:

"The air up there in the clouds is very pure and fine, bracing and delicious. And why shouldn't it be? - it is the same the angels breathe." Mark Twain in Roughing It (1872).

Tämän viikon teemana on "harrastus". Aiheen innostamana valitsin ensin urheiluharrastuksen ja otin lähikuvia tennispalloista ja mailan jänteistä, mutta ei se tuntunut hyvältä valinnalta  -  onhan tämä puutarha- ja luontokuvablogi. Sitten tein retkeilyaiheisen postauksen (linkki), mutta en osallistu sillä haasteeseen, koska kuvat eivät ole minun ottamiani.

Nämä kuvat liittyvät siis... valokuvausharrastukseeni! :) Niin usein kuin pystyn, kiertelen ympäristössä telezoomin kanssa ja yritän löytää kaunista ja mielenkiintoista kuvattavaa. Pidän kauko-objektiivilla kuvaamisesta, koska se tuo esiin näkymiä joita ei muuten tulisi huomanneeksi.

Koetan löytää kuviin värejä ja valoa ja tunnelmaa. Kunpa kuviin voisi liittää myös luonnon ääniä ja tuoksuja tai vaikka raikasta ilmaa! Tänä syksynä on ollut ihanaa ulkoilla leudossa säässä ja puhtaassa ilmassa.

Adventtiaika alkaa aivan pian.

There are only few days left till the first Sunday in Advent! Yesterday I went to cut a Christmas tree in the forest and brought it home. We will put it up in front of the entrance and decorate after some days. It will be lovely to stay outside in the darkening evening twilight. One can spend blissful moments there contemplating the stars, or the clouds, or the Christmas lights...

Last hot chocolates

When we were living in Italy, our year was divided in two parts, the ice cream season and the hot chocolate season. In Italy, of course, you can taste the best ice creams in the world, and also very nice hot chocolate is served there. La cioccolata calda is thick and not very sweet.

Since the hot choc season is coming to an end soon, it's time to dedicate some photos to this lovely beverage that contains flavonoids, antioxidants and pure happiness.

This is my favourite cup for hot chocolate. I like love its colour and the material that feels lovely to touch. Perhaps the set could be called breakfast ware, there are also saucers, bowls, mugs, a sugar bowl, and a small creamer, which I find especially cute (see the mosaic at the bottom of this post).

Dark or extra dark chocolate, milk or cream, sugar. Adjust the amounts according to your taste:

The cinnamon roll and the biscuits are just for the photo. In my opinion, the chocolate with whipped cream is so delectable and rich it doesn't need anything to accompany it. I have sprinkled cinnamon over the cream; powdered chilli or ground black pepper would be our other favourites.

Colours of January

Poecile montanus

Lately, the weather hasn't been very inspiring. In January, the sun doesn't climb much above the horizon here in Eastern Finland (between 62° and 63° N), but there are some bright and cheerful days with blue skies.  Often, however, even the sunrays look bleak and the landscapes grey and dreary, in spite of snow...

There are many different shades of brown and grey colours...

... rather elegant shades, I would say, but... ...

On cloudy winter days, it's even more difficult to find something nice to photograph.

I know I'm privileged, though. I only need to step out the front door and I can stand still and contemplate the tall spruces and birches that surround our home. These branches of spruces, with some frozen snow on them, looked rather interesting when seen from below.

Not very intensely hued, but pretty...

Fortunately, at the grocer's you can find flowers as well! Among those available, I chose cut tulips and a primula. Only I should have bought several of them, of different colours.  Nothing says Spring (other than a bunch of crispy tulips) like a pot of cheerful primulas.
