Hello, darkness!

Ihanaa joulukuuta kaikille!

Here in the north, between latitudes 60–70 °N, daylight starts to be scarce.

I don't mind darkness at all... and I love having woodland walks in the evenings. We have again some soft and white snow and, reflecting the artificial lights and moonlight, it clearly increases the brightness. (Did you know that the fresh, dry snow reflects 80 to 90 per cent of the incoming light, whereas wet snow reflects only about a half.) Plus: If you happen to fall in the dark, you fall into the soft snow.

Lisäys: Otava sattui olemaan juuri oikeassa kohdassa, kun eilen maanantai-iltana päätin yrittää ottaa oikein pimeitä kuvia.
Jalusta, pitkä valotusaika, kameran itselaukaisin.

It's not the darkness itself nor the cold itself, but the combination of the two, that makes us Finns often ask why on earth our ancestors chose to settle in such a climate... :)

I found the image below, titled "Any Finnish year", on Pinterest. (I wasn't able to verify the original source.) It's very good, even though in a chart drawn by me, the slice that represents "summer" would be smaller and the "autumn" slice larger.

A Finnish year.

Have a lovely December!

Kaunis kollaasi;-)

  3. What can I say it´s beautiful and dark..... Yes, I think your winter is too long in comparison to the other seasons, but you have to do with it and let the lights shine inside.

  4. Thanks for the diagram. I had a laugh when I read 'That day in March........'. So hard for me to imagine a year of basically cold. I also laughed at the bonus of being able to fall in the soft snow. I wonder at what time of day the first few images were taken.

    1. Thank you, Helen! :)
The time wasn't set correctly in my camera (now it is), but I calculated that the first three landscape images were taken about at 9 a.m. and the last photo (with stars) was taken about at 5 o'clock p.m.

  5. I don't like our long winters here but yours are so much longer and darker than ours! It is good you make the best of it and go outside even in the dark. I like to be cozy inside because our air is damp and raw rather than dry. The tea lights in the crystal glasses are beautiful. I enjoy candles, whether battery operated or wax, during the winter months. Have a beautiful week Sara.

  6. Sweet Sara, what glorious and elegant pictures you have shared! Your sweet spirit and beautiful shining self must drive the darkness away {{smiles}}

Have a glorious week. Hugs to you!

  7. Such wonderful images Sara. Your header, first image and the one of the candles in the crystal holders are just so cheery, despite the darkness. I don't mind the long hours of darkness, but I sure dislike winter's cold. Hugs.

  8. Sara, I think the beautiful candle would warm me -- even in your climate! Christmas holiday decorations brighten up the dark days!

I don't think I would like the combination of dark and cold, but I have never lived in a cold dry place. It gets very gray here in Oregon in the winter and damp which seemed to make my bones ache as we got older. That is why we travel in the winter now, since we are retired.

  9. Mahtavan valoisa asenne pimeyteen!!

  10. The dark and cold can be oppressive when it lingers into February and March. I do like the way that snow lightens the landscape, though. We went for a walk this evening and it was very dark.
Your crystal candle holders reflect the light beautifully. Stay cozy, Sara.

  23. Cold and dark calls for extra candlelight, twinkle lights and something warm and cozy to wear. Hubby and I headed out at our usual 7am walk with Topaz this morning and it was much darker than usual.
Your snowy images are beautiful Sara, we continue with green grass and warmer temps today.
    Hugs,

  28. Wau, oletpa saanut hienosti otavan kuvaan! Tuossa "Any Finnish year" kuvassa nauratti erityisesti tuo lämmin, kevättä enteilevä maaliskuinen päivä, jonka jälkeen talvi jatkuu kuitenkin vielä ikuisuuden! :D Mutta se päivä on aina yhtä ihana!

  29. Fabulous photo's ...
I'm not keen on dark winter nights, and of course living where you are the darkness is so much longer. I like your words 'If you happen to fall in the dark, you fall into the soft snow.'
Yes, that is something to be grateful for ...

Enjoy this last day of November and I wish you a happy month of December

    All the best Jan

  32. Hej!

  33. It sounds like winter is a tough season there - the scenes you share seem quite appealing to those of us outside of it, inviting even, but I imagine it can be a little tiresome after a while. Beautiful scenes you've shared; I especially love your picture with the stars.

  42. So magical pictures! Those stars are called Göncöl’s Wagon in Hungarian. According to one of the legends, Göncöl was a shaman, who healed people, and spoke with trees and animals. When once, the rod of his chariot broke, and no one wanted to help him, in his anger he flew into the sky. :-)
