Reposted: Icicles and cute critters - Kuvia viiden vuoden takaa

Hello all! January 2020 doesn't look quite like could be expected. Usually we have much more snow, like for example five years ago... All the photos and texts of this post have been originally published in January 2015.

There is beauty everywhere around us.

In the last few days, we have seen some unusual icicles. It had been snowing much and on all roofs there were thick, heavy blankets of snow. With thawing, the snow started slowly to slide downwards (and fell down).  In this photo, you can see some of the last chunks still on a roof:

The melt water running under the blanket of snow had formed funny-looking icicles:

This is one of them, seen through our kitchen window:

In the following day, it was sparkling golden in the rays of the afternoon sun:

Looking like abstract art:

Here another one, again seen from the kitchen window:

Below, you can see air bubbles and some seeds trapped in the ice. The colours haven't been edited. The sun was shining and the dark background colour of this and the first photo comes from the trees behind (on the other side of the lake):

And then the critter update (of January 2015!).  One of "our" squirrels has learned to climb a steel pole to reach the bird feeder you can see in this post. I went to tell him/her that even though inventive, this approach is not appreciated by us. He/she decided to back away for a while:

A very cute willow tit came to keep an eye on the situation... and on the feeder:

Thank you for your visit!

xoxo

Merci, Mesdames et Messieurs!

Willow tit (Poecile montanus) is one of my favourite birds.
They are so cute they might also speak French. ;)

Frost - Part umpteen

Hello, I seem to be bombing you with photos in these days! Well, today was a pretty day and I do love ice and snow and I need to cheer myself up...

The temperatures have gone down but there's practically no snow.  Normally the plants would be safely resting under the snow by now.  I have tried to protect the more delicate plants from the hard frost, but will that be enough?  The forecasts don't give much hope. *sigh* The first plant and seed catalogues have arrived, but - blimey! - with this capricious weather one feels baffled and demotivated.

What I can do is to follow my motto: "Keep Calm and Take Photos". :)

The photo below is from the same glazed porch (with a red wooden wall) as the "Ice flowers" thumbnail you can see on the Popular posts list:

Ice, snow and timid sunshine

"White, gold and blue."  -  Yesterday was a charming day - sunny and with the temperature some degrees below zero (Celsius). These photos are in the order I took them during the day. I find some of them pretty nice and hope that you will enjoy them too. ♥

Spring days, part 2

It's said that persistent weather patterns have become more common, and indeed, once more, cool and rainy weather has been stuck over us for weeks. Spring advances very slowly. These are my first tulip buds... they have looked like this for days and days:

Fortunately there are young leaves to admire.

Leaflets of Sorbus aucuparia are covered in grey-silvery hairs after sprouting. They look like skeins of wool:

According to Wikipedia, the young leaflets of a rowan smell like marzipan when brayed. Of course I needed to try... Well, I felt only a fresh, green smell.

The young leaves of Sorbaria look pretty:

Spiraea is wearing her tiara...

I've learnt only recently that Rhodiola rosea is dioecious – it has separate female and male plants.

My ‘Tête-a-tête’ daffs look like this, not very happy:

Oxalis acetosella

Gavia arctica

Yes, perhaps the name of this blog should be "My Arctic Woodland Garden" or something. :)
May should mean spring, but can you really speak of spring, if there aren't any flowers yet?

For the mosaics of this week, I have chosen flower photos taken last year. Wild flowers blooming in early June...

... and some shopping done in a nursery.

Thank you, Judith, for hosting!
