The spring of cranes - Kurkia!

Hello all! Most of these photos have been taken yesterday, on the first of May. I had to add some taken today as well, because we have had some special visitors...

Jotenkin hassun näköinen jänis.

Lamoherukka (Ribes glandulosum) jälleen kerran.

Sembramänty on myös suosikkini.

Sambucus racemosa

Terttuselja

Yesterday evening we noticed some Eurasian cranes (Grus grus) on the other side of the lake. They were too far for my 55-250 mm lens...

... and much cropping was needed.

A little bit later two more individuals landed nearby:

The Eurasian crane is a large, stately bird even though only a medium-sized crane. It is 100–130 cm (39–51 in) long with a 180–240 cm (71–94 in) wingspan.

If swans are the Jumbo Jets of our birdlife, cranes are the Concordes. :)

This morning there were 13 of them. No dances, only some calls and then they gradually started to fly away. Crane has a loud, trumpeting call... truly fascinating. These two are my best photos.

♥!

Kevät on tullut! Punakylkirastaskin sen tietää. :)

  3. Sembramänty on kaunis puu. Upea nähdä noin monta kurkea, mielettömät kuvat. Voi että, olet nähnyt metsäjäniksen! Täällä niitä ei ole, vain rusakoita. Punakylkirastas on oikeastaan ihan kaunis rastas. Meillä ne etsivät pihalta matosia;-) Ihanaa iltaa Sara.

    1. Suurkiitos lajitunnistuksesta, Anne! Korjasin räkättirastaan punakylkirastaaksi. Se lauloikin muuten ihan kauniisti. :)
Kuvani jänis on tosiaan ujo kaveri.

  8. Thank you Sara! I love to see the cranes (kraanvogels in my language). But also the other photos are so beautiful. Always a pleasure to see them. I love above all the berch photo. Thanks for sharing. They were near our house when I was a child. Good memories.

  13. hieno bongaus! Olen kerran nähnyt Hangossa kun kurjet saapuivat meren yltä ja rannalle saapuessaan ottivat ilmassa korkeutta. Uskomattoman upea näky.

  14. What magnificent cranes ! I'm impressed.

    Kram!

  20. Hello, Sara!
You're lucky to see cranes not far from you, I've never seen them such closely. They are big birds, aren't they? Despite on the snow they flew to your place, spring! I like your words that cranes are Concordes, great :-)

  27. Amazing captivating birds!! never seen cranes before from up-close!... So it is very interesting to see them and to observe them in the nature. Also, the swans are lovely to see them in their flying... Gorgeous series of nature aspects captured.
In here, the weather is rainy, cloudy... unusual and unpredictable, as well. Hope that May to be a lovely, sunny month, all over.
A pleasant new week ahead! Alexa

  28. Wow, the cranes are big but so is the hare you showed.
Don't you love the peeling patterns on birchbark? And different bark colours against the snowy background...
I think you must have super lupines Sara, mine are delicate little leaves barely emerging from the soil.
    xx

  30. Lovely pictures. It looks like it's cold there where you live. I live in northern California, where it doesn't get too cold in the winters, and spring and summers are warm. Autumns here are glorious.
