November 2016

The first weeks of November were incredibly beautiful. We had some soft, light snow and the sun was still shining high. Now it has been cloudy for some days... and of course then I start receiving aurora borealis alerts.  I wonder if anyone has studied the connection between the Northern Lights and the cloudy weather in Eastern Finland? Blimey, we could be on the verge of a major scientific breakthrough! ;)

Very probably we won't see the full moon either, so I'm looking forward to seeing your photos...

Other topics: This should be a great spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopos major).  Every year, I take photos of them foraging on this same, old telephone pole.

Great spotted woodpeckers use cracks in the wood as “vises” to hold fir cones while hammering them open.

As you know, woodpeckers don’t sing songs but the males drum loudly against pieces of wood to achieve the same effect, it is, to attract females and to proclaim their territory. Hollow trees offer good resonant qualities and we can imagine their joy, when they find a piece of metal (on a utility pole, for example)... A very fun sound very early in the morning. :)

MakroTex-haasteen aiheena on tällä viikolla MARRASKUU.

A bird mum hatching? :) No, for some reason these great tits find interesting a hole made by a bigger bird (an Eurasian jay) and busily peck on the ground for food. To help them, I made some more holes (removing snow and a little bit of the soil too) with a trenching hoe.  They analysed the holes and decided they weren't good. :D

Have a lovely week!

  1. Lintujen sosiaalinen toiminta on jännittävää.

    1. Kiitos, Pirkko!
Lintulajeissa näyttäisi tosiaan olevan eroja. Hömötiaiset käyvät nopeasti sieppaamassa siemenen ja niitä mahtuu useampi laudalle yhtä aikaa. Talitiaiset jo jäävät pitkäksi aikaa ja hätistävät tosensa ja pienemmät pois. Ja punatulkut ovat kaikista pahimpia. :)

  2. Your ´cold´ photos are a real surprise, especially first and last one are incredibly beautiful. You live in a winter wonderland and the snow will protect all your precious plants. Birds will definitely find their way to the bird feeders I suppose.

  9. I remember that you always take such lovely snowy photos and I can see I will have more to look forward to as this autumn turns into winter. I especially like the one of the delicate branches and the snow gently falling. The lighting is so pretty, Sara.

  15. Your photos are beautiful, Sara. I know that winter is long where you live, but my, how lovely the snow is. The woodpecker is a strong looking bird, isn't he? The great tits really stand out against the snow with their yellow feathers. I am longing for some snow here this winter - we've still had no frost, which is unusual.
We didn't see the moon either - it was raining here.

  16. Lovely images, Sara - they remind me that winter is coming here in southern Canada too. But you would never know it from the November we have been having. Early in the month a couple of days were in the twenties and today again it was 14°C. Bright sunshine too. Amazing!

  20. Underbara vinterbilder!

  24. Sara, what an interesting post and our photos are very similar! I've never seen tits in a hole on the ground in winter, but they are often guests in my garden too, eaten from bird feeder. Love your pictures of tree branches, wonderful!
