"Äidit rakentavat näkymätöntä taloa" - Blackberry winter :)

Lähestyvän äitienpäivän kunniaksi lainaan tähän postaukseen kirjailija Eppu Nuotion ajatuksia äitienpäivästä. Jorma Lehtolan kirjoittama haastattelu on julkaistu Apu-lehdessä 10.5.2018:

Olen nyt jonkin aikaa poissa blogimaailmasta.
Kiitän jo etukäteen kommenteistanne ja toivotan kukkaisaa toukokuuta.
Tapaamisiin!

Hello all! As predicted, it was snowing for two days (Friday and Saturday) and the temperatures were exceptionally low for May. I learned a fun expression, "blackberry winter", on Wikipedia (the italics are mine):

"Blackberry winter is a colloquial expression used in south and midwest North America, referring to a cold snap that often occurs in late spring when the blackberries are in bloom. Other colloquial names for spring cold snaps include "dogwood winter," “whippoorwill winter,” "locust winter," and “redbud winter.” The different names are based on what is blooming in particular regions during the typical spring cold snaps.

In rural England, the equivalent term is "blackthorn winter", so-called because the blackthorn in hedgerows blossoms in early April, preceding the leaves, and presents an intense white spray against the black branches of the bush. In Finland, where the phenomenon is incredibly common - even in the month of May - the expression to describe it "takatalvi" (lit: back winter) is part of common parlance."

Blackberries don't grow here (in Eastern Finland), unfortunately, and they surely wouldn't be blooming at the beginning of May... :)

Almost all of these photos have been taken through a window.

Thank you for your comments.
I'll be away for awhile and soon back with many more (blurry) photos! :)
Happy spring days!

  15. Beautiful captures, Sara - even through the window!

I have learnt something new today (always a good thing) with regards to it being called a blackthorn winter here in the UK. We actually did have a falling of snow in the UK very early on in April; it lasted just the day though.

Lovely seeing your photos. A good week to you.

  17. I had not heard of "blackberry winter" before reading about it here. It's interesting how these names originate. Your photos of the lake are lovely, as are the birds and flowers from earlier years. Have a wonderful week.

  19. Hi Sara, I loved your pictures.
Here in Brazil the winter when it snows is a 3
days, not more than that; but everything is frozen.
But it sure does not compare to the cold you're used to.
The problem here is the humidity.
The photos you shoot in the snow are beautiful. Before I liked the cold more but the longer I get colder I feel k.
    Continuation of a good week.

  20. Beautiful photos, Sara! Love the colorful birds and snowy scenes, but oh, still cold! Spring will be in a hurry now, I hope. I enjoyed the stories of the names of winter. So much of the 'old ways' are gone, so it is good to pass them on, still. Happy May! xx Karen

The bird cherries are blooming here now. The temperatures are a bit low (+ 13C this morning) but it's ok, it makes the wonderful fresh early-summer green last longer. :)
Wishing you all a beautiful and happy month of June!

  24. Aahh, there's no flower prettier to me than a Rose. They are such sturdy flowers that can survive the harshest weather. Their beauty is hard to explain. And they go way back in time. I love that picture with all the birds and the one with the orange belly. It looks like a Robin. : )

I never saw them here when I was a child and am thrilled every time I manage to see one. :)
