"Christmas red" - Kaksi kuukautta!

In the Finnish language, we have a colour called "joulunpunainen". In Swedish, there's "julröd" and in German "weihnachtsrot". I'm not quite certain if "Christmas red" exists but it must be a lovely shade of red. :)

According to Wikipedia, the traditional colours of Christmas decorations are red, green and gold. Red symbolizes the blood of Jesus, which was shed in his crucifixion, while green symbolizes eternal life, and in particular the evergreen tree, which does not lose its leaves in the winter, and gold is the first colour associated with Christmas, as one of the three gifts of the Magi, symbolizing royalty. Father Christmas/Santa Claus traditionally wears red, because the original Saint Nicholas was a bishop of the Greek Christian church in the 4th century and bishops then dressed in red.

To my evergrowing book shopping list are added at least these books:
Collins, Ace. Stories Behind the Great Traditions of Christmas. Zondervan.
Bowler, Gerry. The World Encyclopedia of Christmas. Random House LLC.

Jaahah, jouluaattoon on kaksi kuukautta.

My next year's planner/organizer/diary will look better than ever, well, at least December will look fabulous with these stickers.

Ihanaa päivää!

Have a lovely day!

  1. As always, Sara, a great post with delicately presented pictures and an informative narrative. These interpretative names for colour are very pleasing indeed, especially when they reflect this kind of historical and symbolic significance. It reminds me, in a different way of course, that the Inuit people have over twenty terms for snow, and I suspect that the Laplanders in your part of the world are equally eloquent.

    1. Thank you, David! This topic (colours and their significance) would deserve a much deeper examination.
As would the number of terms for snow in languages spoken in a northern climate... The first link in English that I found: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/finnish-words-snow-sarah-bonanno-wolde - even my Finnish readers could find this interesting. :)

  2. I'm fairly certain that there is no term for "Christmas red" in English - though you may have started something. The colour "orange" also had no term until oranges began to come into England - that's why we speak of "red-haired", Robin Redbreasts, and red foxes in English. I also read somewhere that the ancient shamans favoured red and white and were supposed to have the power of flight and enter houses by way of the chimney, they may also have some influence of the story of Father Christmas. I love the way you've used all those predominantly red images leading up to the final sunset.

    1. Thank you very much for your interesting comment, John!
When I was a child I found puzzling that our cat was described as "red". :) The wisdom, beliefs and practices of the ancient shamans (and their impact on our culture) is one of the many, many subject matters one would like to know better.

  5. There may not be an official "Christmas Red" in the English language, but I've heard it used to describe a colour. I enjoyed reading about the significance of Christmas colours in the Christian Church. There is such richness in traditions.

  7. Hej Sara!

    Kram!

  8. Ihanaa, kuinka joulurakkaus roihahtelee jossain muuallakin <3 Itse olen kausijuhlija, jonka juhlalistalla komeilee juuri nyt syksy ja joulu. Kaikenlaista on tullut tehtyä lähestyvän juhlan eteen.

:) Ihanan kiinnostava aihe!

  15. Laskin juuri noita päiviä jouluun ja hämmästyin. Totta se on, parikymmentä päivää. Minun jouluintoni nousee vasta joulukuussa, mutta ihastuttavia kuvia on nautinto katsella! Todella joulunpunainen veden kimallus! Tunnelmallisia hetkiä joulun väreissä!

  16. It seems perfect that you should be thinking about Christmas, given your colder weather. Our heat and humidity is rising rapidly and I am loathe to think of Christmas as a result. Such lovely images Sara and such a spectacular sunset.
