Helmet-lukuhaasteen kohta 6: Kirjan nimi alkaa ja päättyy samalla kirjaimella
Hei taas! Ensimmäinen ehdokkaani Helmet-haasteen kohtaan 6 oli italiankielinen yrttikirja Erbe, mutta näin lähestyvän naistenpäivän kunniaksi valitsin ehdokkaan numero kaksi, varsinkin kun sain Maggiorejärveltä tuoreita kuvia hopea-akaasioista (Acacia dealbata), joiden kukkia annetaan esimerkiksi Italiassa naisille naistenpäivän kunniaksi.
On kyllä pakko lisätä, että itse en pidä tämän kasvin kukkien ulkonäöstä enkä tuoksusta enkä siitä, että sitä kutsutaan mimosaksi - minusta oikea mimosa on Mimosa pudica, jonka lehdykät painuvat vastakkain kun lehtiä kosketetaan. :)
Selected Poems ei ole runokirja vaan pikemminkin oppikirja, jossa runojen lisäksi on laaja osa huomautuksia ja tulkintaa. Kirja kuuluu Oxford Student Texts -sarjaan ja sen on toimittanut Jackie Moore.
Alussa on mielenkiintoista elämäkertatietoa. Emily Dickinson (1830–86) oli yhdysvaltalainen runoilija, jonka runoista suurin osa on julkaistu hänen kuolemansa jälkeen. Dickinsonin elämästä on vähän varmaa tietoa, mikä tekee myös runojen tulkinnasta vaikeampaa. Perhe oli varakas ja vaikutusvaltainen. Isä piti tärkeänä myös tyttöjen koulutusta - mutta toisaalta oli julkaissut lehdessäkin mielipiteensä, ettei naisten kuulu kouluttautua niin paljon, että siitä olisi haittaa naisen roolille avioliitossa.
Minähän en osaa runoja tulkita ollenkaan, varsinkaan vieraskielisiä. :) Valitsin alla olevan runon (nro 1072) tähän esimerkiksi, koska pidän sen energisestä alusta ja rytmistä (ja koska aihe sopii naistenpäivään).

Suomennos tähän runoon löytyy kirjasta Golgatan kuningatar, johon valikoiman Dickinsonin runoja on suomentanut ja toimittanut Merja Virolainen (Tammi 2004). Lukemieni esittelyjen mukaan kirjassa on myös tietoa runouden kääntämisestä yleisesti ja Dickinsonin runojen kääntämisestä erityisesti. Minulla ei ollut kirjaa käytettävissä ja löysin netistä vain suomennoksen alun... Jos jollakulla sattuisi olemaan Golgatan kuningatar, koko runon saa mielellään lisätä kommentteihin ja kertoa muutenkin tämän runon taustoista ja tulkinnasta!

Runo käsittelee Dickinsonille tärkeitä aiheita, rakkautta, uskoa, naisen asemaa taiteilijana, avioliittoa, kärsimystä... Alkukielisen runon 'Calvary' (suomeksi Golgata) ilmeisesti viittaa myös kirkkoon (luullakseni Calvary Presbyterian Church) San Franciscossa, jonne Dickinsonille tärkeä pappismies Charles Wadsworth siirtyi pastoriksi.
Tätäkin runoa oli hauska koettaa lausua ääneen. :)
In English: Hello all! Today's author is Emily Dickinson.
In the first photos you can see some handsome specimens of Acacia dealbata, photographed some days ago at Lake Maggiore, on the Piedmont side of the lake. Please notice: Some of the photos published on this blog may have been taken by my family members, not by me. For example the recently published photos from Italy are not mine! I have sapiently cropped and edited them though. :)
For this month, we had planned to meet in Northern Italy and I already had bought the tickets, but some days ago all (Finnair) flights to Milan were cancelled for a month... which is of course the correct thing to do and also makes the things more simple. Nobody wants to carry and pass the virus on to others, especially to vulnerable groups.
I do hope the infection numbers start to fall soon. My inner hero is already getting her cape on... Well, seriously - as always, I hope for the best, but am prepared for the worst. :)

VastaaPoistaI hope this virus is quickly brought under control, although it seems unlikely that will happen. I have travel plans for July and I wonder what conditions will be like then. All we can do is wait and see I suppose.

VastaaPoistaKyllä hopea-akaasian kukat näyttävät herkiltä ja keväisiltä, mutta tuoksusta en osaa sanoa mitään. Ehkä joskus kukkakaupan kimpussa on saattanut olla tällainen oksa jopa täällä kylmässä maassa. Naisten päivään toisaan paremmin sopivat punertavat tai vaaleanpunaiset kukat. Hyvää naisten päivää sunnuntaina Sara!

I too am not a great reader of poetry. I had heard of Emily Dickinson but you prompted me to google search and am now more aware of her life. Both the yellow and your glorious pink flowers of Italy brighten my day.

Thank you for the flowers! Acacia trees always remind me of my college days because that's when I first met the trees, in Santa Barbara, California. They grow in Northern California, too, but I don't see them as often.

Hello, Dear Sara, I enjoyed seeing the beautiful photos of Italy and sweet mimosa tree. Emily Dickinson lived her life not far from where I was born and lived as child. Her life was a mystery, especially her love life, but she was a great observer of nature and human nature, also. I am so glad that we live in these modern times and not when women had to conform to strict gender and societal laws. I hope that you are able to travel to Italy soon. VastaaPoistaYou always have the most beautiful photos. So many events small and large are being canceled here in the States. To error on the side of caution is the safe thing to do. Emily Dickinson is one my favorite American poets. There is wisdom with a sense of reality to her verse.
