Kotikuuset - I ♥ spruces

Puun päivää vietetään Suomessa 27. syyskuuta (Vesan päivänä). Päivän tarkoitus on kiinnittää huomiota puiden ja metsien merkitykseen ja suojeluun. Nykymuotoisen Puun päivän (Arbor Day) katsotaan syntyneen Yhdysvalloissa 1872, mutta Wikipedian mukaan espanjalaiset olivat keksineet juhlistaa puiden istutusta jo paljon aiemmin. Puun päivää vietetään nykyään ympäri maailmaa - monissa maissa keväällä, mutta ajankohta vaihtelee alueen ilmaston mukaan.

Suomessa Puun päivää on vietetty vuodesta 2004 lähtien. Kiitos!

En pystynyt valitsemaan yhtä yksittäistä puuta, valitsin lajin, aivan tavallisen metsäkuusen (Picea abies). Niitä löytyy meidän pihasta vaikka kuinka monta, isoja ja pieniä. Kuuset ovat ylväitä ja kauniita ympäri vuoden. Pihamme ympäristö on tuoretta kangasta, joten pensaskerroksessa viihtyvät esimerkiksi pihlajat ja kenttä- ja pohjakerroksissa monet suosikkini, mustikat, puolukat, saniaiset ja sammalet. Alppiruusut tuntuvat myös viihtyvän. :)

Näiden kotikuusien halaamiseen tarvitaan kaksi aikuista ihmistä. :)

In occasion of Arbor Day (celebrated in Finland on the 27th of September), Finnish garden and nature bloggers have been posting about their favourite trees. What a lovely topic! I love trees and am very happy to participate. I wouldn't have been able to choose one individual tree though, so I decided to choose a species... and that was difficult as well. Who wouldn't love birches? Rowans are the most colourful of our native trees. We Finns are like junipers, we may bend but we don't break. :) In our garden in Italy, I loved the fruit trees (especially apricot, plum and cherry trees), a Lawson cypress, a blue spruce, a sycamore, yes, I  have always liked maples and now I'm also trying to grow red oaks...

But the Norway spruces are the noble, sacred guardian trees of our land.

It's truly fascinating how trees were honoured in many pre-Christian traditions. Think of the old, vast taiga forests that once covered large areas of Scandinavia, Siberia and North America... Some especially handsome trees provided a seat for the spirits and transported the people's messages directly to them.

To read: The Rapid and Startling Decline Of World’s Vast Boreal Forests, published at the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies.

Unfortunately, Norway spruces with their superficial root systems are especially vulnerable to storm winds (ever more common) when compared for example to Scots pines and birches. The shortening of the duration of frozen soil period increases the risk of wind damages.

Kun talven tuulet ne metsässä laukkaa
ja lumet ne lentää ja pakkanen paukkaa...

Mitä vanhemmaksi tulee, sitä rakkaammaksi käyvät lapsuudessa opitut laulut. :) Kirjoittaessani tätä postausta etsin sanat Immi Hellénin tuttuun runoon "Oravan pesä". En muistanut, että siinä on tällainenkin säkeistö:

Ja siitä se näkevi loitos sangen
yli puitten latvain ja valkean hangen.
Kas, susikin alhaalla vaanien käy
–ei oravan pesässä pelkoa näy.

Here are some of our cute neighbours living in spruce trees...

Siberian flying squirrel (Pteromys volans)

Spruces are beautiful all the year round...

I couldn't imagine Christmas without spruces.

Thank God for trees.

Saippua... :)

Tämä kuusi taas on kätevästä peltirasiasta, jonka sisällä on jouluteelajitelma. Kuvan myötä toivottelen teille mukavaa sunnuntaita... Taivaalta leijailee alas jotain valkoista ja keveää. Jouluaattoon on tasan yhdeksän viikkoa. :)

Koska tämä haaste on jo kiertänyt aika pitkään, en haasta ketään erityisesti, mutta kertokaa kommenteissa onko teillä jokin erityisen rakas puu tai suosikkipuulaji. Tiedän ainakin että myös Rita pitää kuusista... :)

Lisäys: Olin aivan unohtaa, että helsinkiläiset ja muut lähellä asuvat voivat nauttia 1.12.2017 Dendrologian Seuran järjestämästä Kuusiseminaarista. Päivän ohjelma on todella mielenkiintoinen!

Do you have a tree that is particularly important to you
or a species/cultivar you like especially much?

Happy Sunday!

  4. Hei Sara, huomaan meidän olevan saman puun ihailijoita - juuri ylistin metsäkuusta omana suosikkipuunamme! Sinun kuvasi ovat taas pysähdyttävän upeita - miten meheviä ovatkaan nuo alkukesän vaaleanvihreät kuusen kasvannaiset!

  7. Being in a northern part of our Country, we too live with Evergreens. Stalwart and sheltering.

I do love Maples, which turn lovely colors, in Autumn. Not so much color this year though. But all Autumn color, is lovely.

Yes, I love to read about the old, old, old forests. Sadly gone, I fear. Mankind has interfered with them, and.... -sigh-

    Lovey post, as always!

    Happy Haunting Time!
(I know, this time of year is not so popular in Europe. But those who still love "The Old Ways," do. :-))

  10. Beautiful photos. Enjoyed this post. I have lots of oak trees on my property and in the fall I have a lot of leaves to rake. Have a blessed day. Madeline

  12. This is a wonderful post Sara. I love the way you have woven the love of your favourite tree with these beautiful photographs.
Australians are not good at recognising our native trees and I'm also quite hopeless, but I constantly stand in awe of our rainforest giants when out hiking.

  13. Dear Sara, I love the pictures in this post! The sight of spruces and snow makes me sigh in awe! I have a great admiration for the flora of the cold and temperate regions since it is so different to what I daily see here, your pictures make me daydream!

  14. Dear Sara, you celebrate an Arbor Day in Finnland? What a nice idea! Originally I'm from Styria, it's a part in the South of Austria. There we also have a lot of wood. So once a newspaper wrote that Styria will become overgrown if there would be no forestry :)

Christmas whithout a tree wouldn't be possible in our house :)

    Greetings Kathrin

  15. Great series of images of conifers, Sara, a feature we share in our respective northern landscapes. Here in Ontario most of the deciduous trees have shed their leaves, but the conifers remain proudly green and within a few weeks will start to wear their garland of snow. Time to start making soups!

  16. Ciao carissima,
    Felice settimana!

  18. Your woodland friends sure are cute!! My favorite tree is the Maple - especially in the fall. It is fire red. But your spruces cannot be more the essence of winter. Their smell under snow is delectable. Love all your pictures.

  19. Here in western Canada (on the west coast), conifers like spruce and fir dominate the forests, with a few deciduous trees. Everything is very green throughout the year, unless snow comes to whiten up the landscape. I always hope for snow for a few weeks, but don't always see it. My favourite tree would be a birch; I love the white bark that peels in such attractive curls.

  20. being from a beautiful valley i know the importance of trees and their role in raising esthetic instinct in soul .

when i used to look at the valley below(our house was at hilltop) the rows of trees below the front hills looked like beautiful laces in fall.
trees were everywhere and i found them as my friend while swinging under them .

i live in small town like city though i have tree in my front yard which has given me the sense of attachment to my childhood .

    spruce looks like pine trees.
i love them specially when they cover with snow in winters and glow with lights on Christmas .

Enchanting photos as always my dear Sara!!!

  21. Hej Sara!

    Kram!

  24. Loving all of your special tree captures. I always have a spruce growing in a pot outside that I bring in year after year for Christmas until it gets too big.
Your wildlife captures are truly stunning!! Your squirrels are sooo much cuter than ours!!
Have a magical weekend Sara with hugs from across the miles xx

  25. Dear Sara, I liked as you've written: 'Finns are like junipers, we may bend but we don't break.' Well said! I love spruce as well, not surprising that Norwegians were the first who used spruce for Christmas celebrations. I have a little blue Abies (blue fir) in my garden, I love it the best now.
    Happy October!

  26. Oh, a beautiful post, Sara! Trees are very special to me and that is why I live in the forest! Your photos are wonderful and I always love them, especially to see the sweet little creatures that live close by. We planted an alpine fir in dedication to my husband's dear Mother whom we lost last December. We plan on decorating it each Christmas in her honor. Her birthday was in December. I also have many trees that I planted from the Arbor Day Foundation. They came in the mail as slender sticks with tiny roots and now they are large and beautiful - flowering pear and hawthorn. I hope you have a lovely week in this last week of October. Hugs xo Karen

  28. The spruces are magical, and I loved to see all the snow on them. I don't get to see the snow much where I live, so it was a treat for me to see. Aahh, what a sweet yellow bird this is. And is that a rabbit? Yours are a bit chubbier than ours here.

    Truly magical pictures, Sara.

  29. Thank you all for your wonderful comments. Many of us love trees... and that's why we love visiting each other's blogs too. I think planting a tree in dedication to a loved one is the most beautiful thing we can do.

It was probably the Finnish author and journalist Juhani Aho (1861 – 1921) that first described the Finns resilient like the juniper tree. We thrive where the hardships are most severe. :)

The very cute small critter with ear-tufts is a Eurasian red squirrel (in the grey winter coat). It looks chubby because of all those sunflower hearts and peanuts eaten from the bird feeder. :)

    ♥ Kiitos! ♥ Grazie! ♥ Tack! ♥
