Best friends :)

Welcome, March - the first spring month!

More than half a meter of snow and counting. :) Some summer photos are needed today. These are from my first posts, written before making this blog public. I think I have posted the photo below several times though, because it's one of my all-time favourites:

In addition to being important pollinators, bumblebees also look incredibly cute, with their round bodies covered in soft hair. :)  Their decline (in Europe and elsewhere) has become a cause for concern.  In Britain, The Bumblebee Conservation Trust aims to support their conservation and to "raise awareness and increase understanding about bumblebees and the social, economic, environmental and cultural benefits which they and other pollinators provide".

Do you know if there are other organizations like that, in other countries?

Rubus odoratus

Söpöjen kimalaisten lisäksi tässä kuvassa näkyy kuinka kauniisti värisävyt vaihtelevat kirjolupiinin kukinnossa kukan iän mukaan:

Ihanaa kevään odotusta!

  2. Spring is my favourite season and I LOVE bumble bees!! Your captures are wonderful. I saw my first bumble bee last week. I do worry as it is still a little cold for them to be buzzing around. It will be very sad if bumble bees become extinct. We'll just have to make sure Sara that we grow more bee friendly flowers this year!! Loved your link, thank you. Enjoy your winter wonderland as it wont be long now before your flowers are blooming. Have a great Wednesday :)x

  3. Hello, Sara!
I love bumblebees too, especially last years when bees often disappear. They are hard working, love to hear their noise.
You still have much of snow, do you? Here we had a week of plus temperature, snow melts fast. Have a nice first day of spring!

  4. Ihanaa alkavaa maaliskuuta myös sinulle Sara! Ollaan jälleen askelta lähempänä kevättä, vaikkei sitä ihan uskoisikaan kun katsoo ulos (puoli metriä lunta). Hurmaavia kesäkuvia ja niin hyödyllisiä kimalaisia.

  5. Kimalaisten surina on yksi kesän nautittavista ilmiöistä. Ainakin viime kesänä niitä oli todella runsaasti esimerkiksi pihlaja-angervon kukissa. Toivottavsti pystymme edistämään niiden elinolosuhteita.

Noita kirjolupiinikuvia olen ennekin ihaillut - niissä on todella kesän henki!

Kiitos kommentista torpan blogissa, ihanan keväistä maaliskuuta!

  7. Täällä on jo hieman keväisemmät tunnelmat, koska lämpötila nousi plussan puolelle ja lumet sulavat vauhdilla. Toivottavasti sielläkin kohta! Kimalaiset ovat suloisia :)

  10. Happy March to you, sweet Sara! Februaruy simply flew by, didn't it!

Thank you for your lovely photos. We "enjoyed" snow yesterday, but I am counting down the days until the flowers start blooming :)

    Hugs to you!

  11. I'm so glad you posted these - I hadn't seen them before. And there is nothing like pictures of bees drinking at flowers to encourage us when we are waiting for winter to pass! I admire your skill at capturing such good photos. It's been cold at my place, too, too cold for the bees still, though the birds are returning....

  13. I loved your previous post of snow and squirrel, but as I scrolled through this post into it, I fully understood your need for summer colour. The bright, happy pinks of this post are such a contrast to the wintery greys.
It makes me realise how fortunate I am to live where we have sunshine most of the year, even if we have to suffer high temperatures.

  21. Thank you for these wonderful photos! I often saw our furry, striped friends in my grandparents' garden, a long time ago. But I don't remember that I had met with them in the last years. :(
Have a happy March, dear Sara!

    1. Thank you very much, Janicce!
The flowers are lupins, my favourite garden plants. I can't tell you any names of cultivars, because we let the rainbow lupins (Lupinus ×regalis) and Russell hybrids (Lupinus polyphyllus) hybridize by themselves and then remove those colours we don't like. :)
The label "Lupinus", in the sidebar, helps you to find all my posts about lupins.
      Big hugs!

A etiqueta "Lupinus", na barra lateral, te ajuda a encontrar todas as minhas postagens sobre lupins.
      Beijos!

  26. Mihin me joutuisimme ilman unelmia - unelmia keväästä, kukista, heräävästä luonnosta?

  27. First of all, Sara, thanks for your lovely card which was waiting for me when I arrived home. Your handwriting is so beautiful! Here the snow has pretty much all disappeared. For a couple of days it was actually warmer here than it was in Hong Kong. I have an awful cold right now - I think I picked it up on the aircraft. It's one of the hazards of flying I suppose.

  29. Thank you all for your comments!

Kiitos kaikille kommenteista! Tulevana keväänä rakentelen ruokintapaikan kimalaisille. Suomen luonnonsuojeluliiton sivulla (http://www.sll.fi/mita-sina-voit-tehda/omalla-pihalla/asukkaat) on hyviä ohjeita pihan muidenkin asukkaisen auttamiseksi.
