Summer memories: Pelargoniums

Some pelargonium photos taken last summer. Unfortunately I can't tell you the names of the cultivars - either they were not known or they have been forgotten during the passing years. :)

I find it difficult to photograph pelargoniums (to reproduce well the colours), but some of these photos are rather pretty, I think.

Tämän viikon MakroTex-haasteen aiheesta LÄHIKUVA tulee minulle ensiksi mieleen henkilökuvaus... Esineitä kuvattaessa lähikuva on "tiivis" kuva esineestä. Kuvattava kohde ei välttämättä näy kokonaan. Hmm. Toivottavasti ainakin osa näistä kuvista on lähikuvia. :)

Menneenä kesänä postasin vain harvoja kuvia pelargoneista. Pelargonien hoidossa on takana yksi huono kesä (2015), huono talvi (jostain syystä talvehtiminen ei oikein onnistunut) sekä kohtalainen kesä (2016). Kasvit kyllä piristyivät kesän kuluessa, olihan kesä melko aurinkoinen ja lämmin.

Pelargoneja kuvatessa harmittaa se, että kauneinta tummaa punaista en saa kuvissa näkymään oikeanlaisena ja tumma fuksiakin näyttää kuvissa helposti liian räikeältä. Vaaleanpunaiset onnistuvat ehkä parhaiten.

Suosikkikuvani on otettu sisältä ikkunan läpi ulospäin! :) Tässä hämyisessä kuvassa kukkien väri näkyy hieman paremmin:

Seuraavissa kuvissa syksyinen aurinko paistaa jo sisälle siirrettyihin kukkiin:

Räikeää auringonpaistetta...

... ja illan hämyä:

Mukavaa uutta viikkoa!

Have a lovely week!

October 2016: Cloudy and foggy

In the past few weeks, our weather has been cloudy (not very rainy though), often foggy and overall very grey.

Few flowers are still blooming and  I'm growing ever more fond of ferns. As Ambra Edwards wrote in the Guardian: "There is something ancient and mysterious about ferns. The marvellous intricacies of their leaf forms are preserved eternally in fossil shards, and there is a goose-bump thrill to watching the furry crosier of a royal fern unfurl, knowing that any mildly observant dinosaur will have witnessed the same minor miracle – for this plant has been growing, essentially unchanged, for 240m years."

Royal fern (Osmunda regalis) wouldn't survive here, unfortunately, so my local favourite is Athyrium filix-femina, common lady-fern.

Kuukausikollaasit Pieni Lintu -blogissa.

- Tunnelmallista marraskuuta!

Mums and ferns:

Ferns and mums:

In my previous post, I have shown a pair of socks I just finished. As I mentioned earlier, I participated in an Autumn Knitalong lead by Tiina. In her blog, you can find the daily instructions, at the moment only in Finnish though. On Instagram you can see how many different combinations of colours were used... and all so beautiful! I wouldn't be able to pick a favourite.

My socks look different because I used only a multicoloured, self-striping yarn (see below) together with a dark grey colour.

The "Autumn socks" were designed for a woman and I modified the number of loops and colour patterns, because this pair will be a Christmas present to my brother. He is the fisherman mentioned in the previous post... and very special indeed. We all thank him for this lovely blog, because the camera I use was originally is his and I have had many useful tips from him. :)

The finished socks look like this:

As to my previous post, I would also like to tell to the foreign readers of this blog that celebrating Halloween is not an old tradition in Finland, but it's becoming more popular also here. I find the origins of this feast fascinating, but notice how important the commercial interests involved are. In our family, we don't celebrate Halloween and the peppers of the previous post were carved for photographic purposes only. :)

In Finland, All Saints' Day is celebrated on the Saturday between 31 October and 6 November. This year it falls on the 5th of November. The tradition is to light candles and to visit the graves of passed-away relatives and loved ones.

The first snow fell on the 25th. Now the snow has already disappeared and it's raining.

Another winter to survive? We can do it!

Have a happy and healthy November!

Boo!

It was needed to find something YELLOW for this week's MakroTex challenge. This is a yellow pepper even though it looks orange in the photo... I had the idea of Halloween peppers from a blogger friend from Britain. In Jan's post, you can see how peppers look when they have been carved properly. :)

Other spooky things photographed recently: A Halloween squirrel...

... a Halloween candle, floating in the air...

... Halloween socks? I just finished these warm socks. They will be delivered by Father C. to a certain fisherman (who doesn't read this blog regularly - let's hope he misses this post).

MakroTex-haasteen tämän viikon aihe on KELTAINEN.  Ylimmän kuvan taidokkaasti kaiverrettu paprika ja kuvissa olevat kynttilät ovat keltaisia, vaikka näyttävät (melkein) oransseilta. Alla oleva kuva todistaa paprikan olleen keltainen. :)

Haasteeseen liittymätön kysymys suomalaisille lukijoille: Katsooko teistä kukaan MTV3:n "Roba"-poliisisarjaa?

Se on tällä hetkellä minun TV-viikkoni kohokohta, mielenkiintoinen, uskottava, sopivan jännittävä. Olisipa tällaisia suomalaissarjoja enemmänkin. Hyvistä näyttelijöistä tulevat ensimmäisinä mieleen Kari Hietalahti, Mari Perankoski ja Taneli Mäkelä, aivan ihania jo "Ihmisten puolueessa" ja "YleLeaksissä" sekä esimerkiksi sympaattinen Leena Pöysti.

Kolmannen kauden 5. jakso ensi sunnuntaina...

Mukavaa lokakuista viikkoa!

The Halloween peppers were eaten (photo above). :)

I wish you all a happy and healthy week... and a safe Halloween too.

Squirrels and swans

Subtitle: Fuzzy photos taken through windows on cloudy and foggy October days

A catchy title for this post would have been "Pole Dance". :) Our bird feeder is now in a new - yet temporary - place and with some wooden parts replaced with plastic ones because this flipping adorable rascal already destroyed them.

This is an Eurasian red squirrel, in grey winter coat but with ear-tufts still small.

Whooper swans (Cygnus cygnus) are really handsome birds and we are happy to see nowadays more of them.

Synchronised cygnets: Heads up...

... heads down. :)

If I go out, this is what I usually manage to capture...

Thank you, Eileen, Anni and Jesh!

Have a lovely weekend!

October: The last glow

Many trees (like birches and rowans) and shrubs have already lost their leaves, but for example some roses and our very young red oaks still look beautiful.

I'm sorry the photos are not very sharp. Once more, the focus seems to be on colours and light! :)
